They say the two rooms that sell a house are the kitchen and the master bathroom. In this case, I’m building, not selling, but nonetheless the kitchen is one of the spaces I am most excited about!
When I started coming up with my vision for each room in our new house, I created Pinterest boards, scoured Houzz, read through my favorite bloggers’ websites (hello Megan Stokes), and pulled inspiration from multiple different sources. The kitchen was a different story. I found ONE photo that I fell absolutely in love with and that really became my vision for the room in itself. Here is the magical photo in all its glory!
Fun fact – I love the work of the designer who created this beautiful space so much that we actually ended up hiring her firm to help furnish some of the rooms in our new house. I can’t wait to share more about that experience and the final designs – stay tuned!
Anyway, back to the kitchen. Here are a few of the things I love so much about this design that I am planning to carry into our new home:
- Color scheme – I am SUCH a fan of an island that is a different color from the rest of the cabinets, and I love the subtlety of the pale gray in contrast with the white. We were already planning to have traditional dark hardwoods throughout the main floor of our home, so the flooring will have a similar look as well.
- Marble – Okay, so I am not copying the marble, but I am copying the look! White marble is my absolute favorite countertop material in the whole world. It it so classic, elegant, timeless, beautiful, the list goes on. Unfortunately, marble is controversial as a countertop material due to its risk of staining, so I was a little nervous to put it in the kitchen. So, you can imagine how thrilled I was during our design selection process when I learned about a new stone called dolomite. Dolomite is actually a form of marble, but is supposed to be much more durable than a traditional marble. I was able to find a dolomite that looks almost exactly like the marble you see in this photo, and felt much more comfortable selecting it because of the improved performance. If you want to geek out on building materials, here’s a great article about dolomite. The specific stone they reference in the article that won the Natural Stone Institute’s award for 2020 Stone of the Year, Tesoro Blanco Dolomite, is going to be the countertop in our master bath!
- Extended upper cabinets – Look at all of that storage space! Like you see in this picture, our kitchen cabinets will have transom cabinets on top of them to increase storage – and they look beautiful too.
- Mixed metals – To me, mixing 2-3 metals creates a lot of interest, as long as they’re intentional and coordinated. Our kitchen is going to have brass lighting paired with chrome fixtures (faucet, drawer pulls, hinges, built-in soap dispenser).
- Farmhouse sink – Enough said 🙂
- One additional detail not pictured here that we are adding to our kitchen are window sconces. We will have a window on either side of our gas range, and I am adding a beautiful sconce over each one.
Here is my final design board for the room, with sources listed below.
